This exhibition will be my first solo show and in Bern!!!

I will hang some of my latest work, that was inspired while working on the streets of Barcelona and Italy with all the African immigrants and continuously chased by the police. It shocked me tremendously when I was in Italy and saw the extreme contrast of the wealthiest and this poor people that risk their lives, to give a better one for their families that they leave behind.

This was not a thought or a concept that was formed in time, it was a direct eruption from my gut!!!

Gipsy Caravan

Owner of an enigmatic personality and a life marked by the permanent search of new experiences, Sofìa Rossi Bunge unfolds an entire universe of works that capture the essence of the spaces and contexts where they were conceived.

As every artist who grew up within a family of collectors and painters – the Bunge Guerrico and the Alvarez Calderòn -, where art played a fundamental role in daily life, indefectibly her production was conditioned by it. Since she was a little girl, always carrying her drawing book, Sofìa adopted the habit to register everything that was around her; everything seemed to be stimulating and her activities were related with some artistic discipline. An even when she showed interest in music, painting prevailed. Later on, far from the dense years of religious school and the formal obligations that seemed to asphyxiate her talent for drawing and painting, her life moves to the city of Boston in the United States, where she studies at the Art Institute of Boston. She finishes her Degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, works for the University with the international students, and simultaneously takes curses of photography, illustration, theatre, literature, dance and music at The American College of London, Harvard Extension School, Berklee College of Music, and later on at the Contemporary Music School in Buenos Aires. Nevertheless, even when specialized in Painting and Ceramics, painting was and still is her love, but doesn’t disqualify the possibility of experimenting with other mediums in the future. Because for an artist who made of travelling the main source of experiences, the sedentary becomes replaced by the nomadic, adopting a technique to fit these circumstances is absolutely necessary. Being able to manage acrylic, watercolor, ink, and charcoal, among others, oil on canvas remains her great love: “oil is flexible and I think that goes well with my personality. I like its smell and texture, what you can accomplish with oil, you can´t accomplish with any other kind of paint…”

Pragmatic, concrete, aware of her needs and limitations, Sofìa chooses the medium to express herself according to her life style, which breaks all structures; and she knows that as long as she has an ambulant home, her work would have to adjust to constant changes. Changes that inspire and nurture her, personally and artistically. None stop, constantly, because as soon as she apprehends a stimulus as a blank slate, her mind prepares to welcome the impact of the new; that shooting of information that occurs to those who wake up in different landscapes regularly. Therefore, images with a great amount of fantasy are born from the imaginary, inexistent characters which paradoxically look familiar; for some reason we can recognize them and even recognize ourselves in them.

Her work has been influenced by Guayasamin, Cecilio Guzman, Gil Imana, Juan Battle, Berni, Frida Kalho, Haring, Warhol, Ingres, Van Gogh, Picasso, Schiele, Tamara Lempicka; this and more are artists that amaze her. Her works seems to follow no pattern, yet has profoundly and cautiously organized; although, lately she has been working in series, some sort of anchoring for a spirit that allows being surprised to rule. This kind of order avoids an imagination without boundaries, to overflow. Images stored in her memory that waiting for the right moment to come into existence. The serie “India” has the impact of the time lived Varanasi, one of the oldest and most sacred cities in India, where the solemn presence of antiquity and the power of religion are present in every aspect of daily life. Tradition and moral values confronting the occidental world, both worlds translated as one. Curiosity inquires when an artist like Sofia Rossi Bunge, born and raised in the center of the occidental culture, gets touched by Buddhism and Shamanism, and adopts a gipsy life as her own, turning herself into an eternal migrant. In other series such as “What a wonderful world for some people”, she is emphasizing social injustice and becomes defiant and denounces at the same time.

Traveling is her engine, her the impulse to the unknown, always searching for peoples eyes, those who come close to her art guided by their sensibility; the “street world scenario”. Having exhibited in Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, London, Boston, painting murals in cities as Varanasi, she searches for alternative places to show her work: that “street” space that she chooses, like a festival or nearby biennale; that she knows and can recognize her because she´s become a world citizen.

For some reason we choose certain roads without knowing why. In Sofia’s life, painting ensembles her mood, it is a needs no words. All she can and can´t say, can be read in her work: clear, aesthetically beautiful and formally impeccable. They talk about an artist who doesn’t abandon the girl even when the woman is telling the story. A charming imprint to look at, yet the charismatic characters save a question for us in their eyes that interpellate us, mostly by capturing our sight. A question each one of us should discover and eventually try to answer.

Sofia´s work is the result of the encounter of unconscious passions, the necessity to know and dig inside, outside, the almost obsessive impulse to communicate and a deep love for the others. All of those that go through her life, which later on she will immortalize in a canvas or paper… leaving the physical behind, but still carrying them within her memory, to follow the gipsy caravan to a new land.

Sofia Rossi Bunge was born in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1976. Actually she resides in the Bern region in Switzerland.

Los bastidores los prepara Luka, mi marido, con bolsas de papas "antiguas"... me refiero a antiguas no con fecha de exactitud pero si sabiendo que varian entre 30 a 50 años de anitguedad. Las recolectamos a pedido a los granjeros de la zona, algunas todavia tienen la impresion de la marca y esas las estamos guardando tal cual están porque son increibles...

Caravana Gitana

Dueña de una personalidad enigmática y con una vida marcada por la búsqueda permanente de nuevas experiencias, Sofía Rossi Bunge despliega todo un universo de obras que logran atrapar la esencia de los espacios y contextos donde fueron concebidas.

Como todo artista que crece en el núcleo de una familia de coleccionistas y pintores – los Bunge Guerrico y los Alvarez Calderon -, donde el arte cumple un rol fundamental en lo cotidiano, indefectiblemente su producción se ve condicionada por dicho ambiente. Desde niña, siempre acompañada por su cuaderno de dibujos, Sofía tomó por costumbre registrar todo aquello que la rodeaba; todo parecía ser un estímulo y sus actividades se relacionaban con alguna disciplina artística. Y aun cuando se interesó por la música, la pintura fue la que prevaleció. Con el tiempo, muy lejos ya de los densos años de escuela religiosa, lejos de las obligaciones formales que parecían asfixiar su talento para el dibujo y la pintura, su vida se traslada a la ciudad de Boston en los Estados Unidos, donde decide cursar sus estudios universitarios en el Art Institute of Boston. Egresa de la carrera de Bellas Artes y Diseño Gràfico, desarrolla tareas para la Dirección de la Universidad y los estudiantes internacionales, y simultáneamente, toma cursos de fotografía, ilustración, teatro, literatura, danza, música y pintura en el Berklee College of Music, The Harvard Extension School of Boston, The American College of London, y finalmente en la Escuela de Música Contemporanea. Sin embrago, aun cuando se ha especializado en pintura y cerámica, la pintura fue y es su metiere pero no descalifica la posibilidad de incursionar en la escultura en el futuro. Porque para una artista que ha hecho del viajar su principal fuente de experiencias, el sedentarismo se reemplaza por lo nómade, siendo necesario adoptar una técnica que se adaptara a dichas circunstancias. Conocedora del manejo del acrílico, la acuarela con tinta, el marcador sobre papel y la carbonilla, entre otros, es el oleo sobre tela su gran amor: “el oleo es flexible y creo que eso va con mi personalidad. Me gusta el olor y la textura, lo que se puede conseguir con el oleo no se puede con ninguna otra pintura…”.

Pragmática, concreta, consiente de sus necesidades y limitaciones, Sofia elige los medios para expresarse en función de un estilo de vida que rompe con cualquier esquema; y sabe que en tanto su hogar sea ambulante, su obra deberá acompañar ese movimiento y amoldarse a los permanentes cambios. Cambios que la inspiran y nutren primero al ser humano y luego a la artista, sin pausa, permanente y constantemente porque no termina de absorber un estímulo como una tabula rasa, que su mente se prepara para recibir el impacto de un nuevo medio; estímulos que la bombardean de información como a todo aquel que se acostumbra a despertar en paisajes distintos con relativa frecuencia. Y así nacen imágenes con una enorme cuota de fantasía, que le permite inventar, desde su imaginario, personajes inexistentes que paradójicamente nos resultan familiares; por alguna razón podemos reconocerlos y hasta reconocernos en ellos.

Muchos son los referentes en su obra: el arte latinoamericano, Guayasamin, Cecilio Guzman, Gil Imana, Juan Battle, Berni, Frida Kalho, Haring, Warhol, Ingres, Van Gogh, Picasso, Schiele, Tamara Lempicka; muchos son los nombres y las influencias y la lista se va engrosando simplemente con mirar alrededor y encontrar artistas que la maravillen. Un trabajo que parece no seguir estructura alguna pero que guarda un profundo criterio a la hora de organizarse; las series parecen ser un descubrimiento bastante nuevo dentro de su producción, una suerte de anclaje para un espíritu que deja liberado al factor sorpresa gran parte de su existencia. El orden que proporcionan las series permite que no se desborde una imaginación sin fronteras. Es asi como las series van creciendo con el paso del tiempo, imágenes que quedan archivadas en la memoria y a su debido momento salen a la luz. La serie “India” recibe el impacto del tiempo vivido en Varanasi, la cuidad mas antigua y sagrada de la India donde se respira la solemne presencia de la Antigüedad y el poder de la religión sobre lo cotidiano, el peso de la tradición y los valores morales que se se entremezclan en lo social de una forma tan diametralmente opuesta al mundo occidental, que cuesta asimilar ambos mundos como parte de un todo. Y lo curioso y deleitante es ver cómo una artista como Sofía Rossi Bunge, nacida y criada en el centro de la cultura occidental, elige dejarse influenciar por el Budhismo y el Sahmanismo, se inserta en la cuna del mundo gitano y adopta su estilo de vida como propio, al punto de convertirse ella misma en una eterna migrante. En otras series como “What a wonderfull world for some people”, el énfasis se pone en la injusticia social, tomando una perspectiva que desafía y denuncia a la vez.

Viajar es su motor, es aquello que la impulsa a lo desconocido, buscando siempre la mirada de la gente, de aquellos que se acercan a su arte guiados por la sensibilidad; el “escenario del mundo de la calle”, como ella lo llama. Habiendo exhibido en Buenos Aires, Londres, Boston y pintado murales en ciudades como Varanasi, la artista alterna entre esos espacios de exposición que el mundo del arte legitima y aquel espacio “callejero” que ella elige cuando se apresta a vender sus obras en una plaza o en las cercanías de una bienal de arte contemporáneo; aquel espacio que ella conoce y que la conoce a ella porque es una ciudadana del mundo.

Por alguna razón elegimos determinados caminos sin saber porqué lo hacemos. Para Sofía, el pintar se traduce en su estado anímico, es una necesidad vital que no logra, ni interesa que lo haga, poner en palabras. Todo lo que puede decir, y lo que no puede, se lee en sus obras: son claras, estéticamente bellas y formalmente impecables. Nos hablan de una artista que no abandona a la niña aun cuando es la mujer quien cuenta la historia y traduce en colores lo que ve a su alrededor. Una factura que se nos presenta agradable a la vista y aun así muchos de los carismáticos y atractivos personajes guardan una pregunta en sus miradas que nos interpela mirándonos, por lo general, directamente a los ojos. Una pregunta que cada uno deberá descubrir y eventualmente tratar de responder.

La obra de Sofía es el producto del encuentro de las pasiones inconscientes, de una necesidad de conocer e indagar en el adentro y en el afuera, la pulsión casi obsesiva por comunicarse a través de la pintura y un profundo amor por el otro; los otros. Esos tantos y miles de otros que pasan por su vida, la acarician, ella se deja acariciar y los inmortaliza en sus obras…y luego los abandona, aunque llevándolos siempre en su memoria, para seguir la caravana gitana hacia nuevas tierras.

Sofía Rossi Bunge es Argentina, nacida en la ciudad de Buenos Aires en 1976. Actualmente reside en la ciudad de Berna, Suiza.
